Director General’s Message

“NOTHING EVER BUILT ROSE TO SUCH HEIGHTS AS TO TOUCH THE SKY, UNLESS SOME MEN DREAMED THAT IT SHOULD SOME MEN BELIEVED THAT IT COULD SOME MEN WILLED THAT IT MUST”.

SUNFO (Sri Lanka-United Nations Friendship Organisation) was formed on 22nd May, 1999 (National Heroes Day in Sri Lanka) by signing the inaugural declaration of SUNFO in Colombo – Sri Lanka by founder members of SUNFO with the patronage of the Speaker of Parliament of Sri Lanka Hon. Dr. K. B. Rathnayake MP and with the blessings of His Excellency Peter Witham – United Nations Resident Coordinator for Sri Lanka.

Since then thousands of people have joined SUNFO in all parts of the country as well as overseas as members and supporters who love the mission of SUNFO; that is building a non-political, non-racial and non-sectarian peoples moment that seeks to work for the well-being, harmony and Peace of mankind according to the principles of  the United Nations. So far over one million  people have participated SUNFO activities, programs and initiatives.

During the last 16 years of its humble journey, SUNFO expanded its services island-wide by forming SUNFO branches in provincial level and also by establishing SUNFO Co-operative Alliances in  other countries of the world.

SUNFO Southern Province Child Development Center – Yatagala, SUNFO Center for the Development of Full Human Potential, SUNFO Legal Aid and Human Development Center – Welikada Prison, SUNFO Peace Dagaba – Madurawela, SUNFO Monument of Inter-religious  Peace and Harmony – Lunawa,  Mahatma Gandhi non-violence Statue, SUNFO – Vendenheim Youth Development Center, Lakshapathiya, SUNFO Global Understanding Library – Uragasmanhandiya, SUNFO Recreational Center – Elpitiya, SUNFO Symbol of Peace – World Parliamentary Monument at Sri Jayawardenapura, Maharishi – Memorial at Moratuwa are some of the infrastructural institutions commissioned by SUNFO.

Some of the remarkable service activities initiated by SUNFO are World’s first Human Rights Marathon, Striving For Excellence programme, SUNFO Global Village for Peace, Culture and Friendship, SUNFO Medical Camps for poor and needy, SUNFO Children Clubs for Humanity, North-South Friendship Journey,  100KM Peoples Chain against Poverty, Stand Up-Speak out World Guinness Records for Millennium Development Goals, Civil Society Leaders  and youth Leaders trainings for MDGS, ffirst Youth Parliament in Sri Lanka, Consultations for Post 2015 Process and  SDGS, Commemoration of National Days of UN Member Countries, Tsunami & Natural disaster relief programmes. Environmental Mobilizations, High level consolations on Policy matters, Hosting South Asian Peace Youth Camp,  Global Citizens initiatives, Celebration of UN Special Observances and Workshops for Peace and Global Understanding Project.

About Peace Ambassador Dr. Sir Deshapriya S. Wijetunge

Peace Ambassador Dr. Sir Deshapriya S. Wijetunge is an Engineer by profession and served in the Asia’s largest Irrigation, Hydropower and Human Development programe named as Mahaweli River Basin Project in Sri Lanka. He became the President of Mahaweli United Engineers Association and Vice President of Mahaweli Joint Trade Union Federation of 22,000 strong work force of the Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka. Further he served as the General Secretary of  the National Associations of Professionals in Engineering, Technology and Science under the patronage of His Excellency President of Sri Lanka. He has held several key positions in various professional, trade union and social movements.

He is the Co-founder of Sri Lanka-United Nations Friendship Organisation (SUNFO) and has been serving as its Director General since 1999. He became the National Coordinator of Global Call to action Against Poverty (GCAP) in 2005 and subsequently elevated to GCAP World Mobilization Task Force Official and GCAP South Asia Board Member. He is an Advisor of South Asian Network for Social and Agricultural Development (SANSAD). He was elected and served as a member of the action/2015 Asia Steering Committee for United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. He led Sri Lanka actions of United Nations Millennium Campaign- Stand Up Guinness Record Mobilizations for UN Millennium Development Goals.

In the year 2000 at the Convocation of World Leaders Dr. Wijetunge was honoured as an “Ambassador of Peace” at the UN Head Quarters, New York. Many National, Regional and International Awards and Honours conferred upon him by appreciating his yeoman services. He has travelled to over 50 countries in the world with the message of Peace and addressed a large number of world conferences, high level consultations and workshops in many Capital cities and important World Forums. He has met Secretary Generals of United Nations, Heads of States, Heads of World Bodies such as UN, Commonwealth, SAARC, ASEAN, World Bank/IMF, EU, UNESCO etc, Religious Leaders and Social Leaders during these journeys and goodwill missions.

He has been appointed as a Member of  International Peace Advocacy Committee for the implementation of the International Law on the Cessation of war and achieving of World Peace, Director (UN Affairs) of the Open International University (Medicina Alternativa), Elite Panelist of Global Honorary Board Advisors for Confederation of International Accreditation Commission (CIAC – Global), Honorary Global Peace & Diplomacy Advisor of Confederation of International Healthcare Foundation (CIHF), Advisor of KEISE International University, Publicity Ambassador of HWPL and Together 2030 Consultative Committee Member for  United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Many across the borders in every continent have identified Dr. Wijetunge as a prominent Social leader, Peace and Human Rights activist and Environmentalist who loves nature and also as a simple humble friendly person to all.
